Can someone please help me? I am not an electician but I really need to have a code in black and white right away that deals with GFI. I have a situation at a work place where the ice machine (they always leak) is plugged into a non-GFI outlet I have to think that is wrong. What code, standard, or what ever would cover that please? There is an extension cord plugged into the same outlet tat is routed under the ice macj=hine and is attached to a microwave that can easily be stepped on as well. I need to stop this right away. Sorry if I am posting in the wrong place, I am still quite the amature here....Tahnks

Provided it is not in a location covered by 210.8(B), then it is fine.

That could be considered acceptable by 400.7(8).
That could be considered unacceptable by 400.8(1).

I would consider it unacceptable, IMO. The microwave should have a receptacle on the countertop to eliminate the use of extension cords.

(In case anyone is curious, check out this post by Jioman explaining his tie to the industry.)

Sorry if I am posting in the wrong place...
I think so, I'll move it over to the Safety forum.

The relevant article in the National Electrical Code is, as George mentioned, 210.8(B). It says that in non-dwelling units, you must have GFCI protection for receptacles in five specific locations. From what you described, the ice maker is not in one of those five locations. So the code would not require GFCI protection.

But the code is not a design manual. It does not tell us how to make design choices. If the owner wanted to install GFCI receptacles for that location, the NEC will neither say no nor say yes.
