I heard from a co worker that he was given a meter to install for a new service, when he plugged it in, it exploded. turns out it was a 120 volt meter not 240.
Has anybody seen this before and what is it application?

Thanks

Florida Power and Light provides a 2-Wire, 120V 1ph service. The ones I have seen are for small utility pedestals (communications, cable, ect..)

It appears your co-worker didn't employ safe working practices...

I've seen them in older houses around here. The last one I changed out, you couldn't remove the meter it was actually connected to the base. What was strange was that the utility was supplying the house with three wires, they simply spliced the two hots together at the riser.

I believe that they called it an A-base meter or something to that effect.

Our IAEI group give out an award every year to an outstanding member of the chapter and it is a lamp with one of these meters built into it and it actually turns. It's very cool.

I have changed out hundreds of the A base meters but have never seen two hot wires splice together. Seems like there would be some sort of explosion to me. Maybe I'm missreading this.
The A Base meters had a terminal under the meter.
There are still a few around here. The poco hates them and encourages upgrades. They are somewhat dangerous.

i installed a 3 ph. service last year. the day after poco hooked it up, a delivery truck making a drop next door backed into it, pinched the feeders where they came into the meter base, and the entire meter base exploded. it was pretty awesome. the 2" galvanized mast was laying about 15' away, and only a partial of the base of the hub remained. the insulation on the feeders turned white.

Another rumor from the company I work for: A utility company meter tech was almost decapitated as he was installing the meter. Apparentlly a socket extension was left inside the main resting on a few bus bars. When the meter was plugged in it was launched out of the meter socket and embeded itself in the wall across the panel room. I haven't been able to verify any truth behind the story yet.

I once got in a hurry and forgot to check the sockets before I plugged in the meter. I had gotten some metal shavings in it because I cut the riser after I installed it. It made a pretty good bang when I went to plug in the meter. The guy I was with was really surprised that I didn't drop the meter when it went off. He said I looked like a football player protecting the ball when I went down.

I was kind of surprised when I saw that too, as I assumed that the POCO would have to pull new lines to the house.

Riser is set up like a 120/240 service. POCO splice the 2 "hot" riser wires to 1 of "their" hot wires. Neutral to bare on the triplex drop.

House needs to be updated. Usually find this after a storm comes and creates work for us.
