The fuel gas code used to specify that a gas meter could not be placed within three (3) feet of any source of ignition. This was to include the elctrical meter socket on the side of the structure. Is there anything that would address this in the electrical code regulating the distance to the meter or regulators that may vent gas?

Re: Electric Meter/Gas Meter Location

I've looked for this before. It's not part of the NEC. Just NFPA 54.

Re: Electric Meter/Gas Meter Location

The meter installation is not a spark producing device. The only time it would be producing sparks is if someone were to pull the meter under load. I can't imagine someone pulling a meter under load if the smell of gas were strong enough to be inside the explosive range.

Re: Electric Meter/Gas Meter Location

Charlie our poco`s here will not set a meter if there is a gas meter/vent within 3 ft. of the meter base. Not an NEC issue but a poco issue. We usually wire after gas is installed since we have to bond to the gas system but sometimes due to schedulng that senario doesn`t happen and we wire before the gas is installed.Sometimes the gas installers set there manifold and meter so close to the meter base that the poco can`t even get their underground in.It always falls back on us since the poco wont set the meter the contractor has us move our meter, sure we get paid to now change a back to back to a split service but it`s a pain and a bother. The NEC has nothing in it about proxcimity to a gas service but does address bonding to it.?????

Re: Electric Meter/Gas Meter Location

Sorry Wayne, I didn't make a complete answer. Since the meter is not a spark producing device, we have to make our own rules to keep the gas meter and equipment away from us. We have the three foot rule in our Goldbook, as well in section 565K. :D
