Electric range conductors

I'm doing a kitchen remodel. The location of the range has moved and the original 220 line could not reach the new receptacle location.

The contractor wants to use the old box as a junction box and extend the line with a new short length of wire & wire nuts.

Is this proper?

Yes, if the box has enough cubic inches, the proper clamps, correct wire connectors, and everything is done correctly. :D

The existing feed is 3-wire!

Are you saying it must be brought up to current code, 4-wire installation, becasue it's being modified?

Re: Electric range conductors

The section from the old location to the new location would be 'new' and would need to meet current code.

That said you could talk to the local inspector and see how they feel about it. :)

They may be a little flexible. :)

How can the new section be 4-wire, if the section going back to the breaker panel is 3-wire?

Having said that, i think the new receptacle is a 4-prong receptacle?!?! Is that okay at the end of a 3-wire feed?

Exactly, it can't.

In my opinion the new location is a new installation and should conform to the current code rules.

This is just my opinion and nothing more, only the inspector knows for sure. :)

Re: Electric range conductors

Your electrician should get the inspector's opinion before doing the work. If it is permitted to remain a three wire circuit, the cord on the range will need to be replaced with a three wire cord and the proper bonding done at the range. Your electrician can do that as well. :D
