What does the "F" stand for in the "FS" and "FD" for these boxes shown in Table 314.16(A) of the 2002 NEC ?

Also, why do they consider these items boxes and not conduit bodies ?

Re: electrical boxes-why(FS & FD)?

I have heard both the term "Ferrous" and "Function" used when describing the "F" The "S" and "D" are "shallow" and "deep" respectively.

I believe Ul Lists them as boxes and not conduit body.

Re: electrical boxes-why(FS & FD)?

They are built to have devices mounted into them, that makes them boxes. Per UL DWTT category, conduit bodies are not "intended" to contain devices.

Never mind.

Jim I am not disagreeing with you but have a question.

I recently saw a conduit fitting shaped like an LB made for hazardous locations.

The tag on it said it was a "Conduit Outlet"

Do you have any info on those?

I had never heard of a conduit outlet.

Re: electrical boxes-why(FS & FD)?

Bob,

Never heard of it.

The term does not show up in the UL White book. However, the UL category QCIT for METALLIC OUTLET BOXES says "This category covers ...conduit bodies, conduit boxes ...". So when a conduit body is marked with its volume it may also be used as a conduit box, if listed as such.

Thanks Jim. :)

The "Conduit Outlet" is hanging on the wall of our training room, I will try to grab a photo of it and more info.

Re: electrical boxes-why(FS & FD)?

I've seen a variety of covers for conduit bodies that contain receptacles, switches, and bushed openings to use them as a weatherhead. I did a service call in a church at the beginning of the week that had push/pull switches mounted in T-body covers for the sanctuary lighting.
