My Mechanical Contractor is installing HVAC VAV Boxes in the above ceiling HVAC Duct that has an electrical shutoff switch outside the HVAC VAV Box. The 120 Volts that is supplied to the HVAC VAV Box operates a small transformer that converts everything to 24 Volts that runs the controls inside the VAV Box. The VAV Box is a mechanical part shown on the project drawings under the mechanical section and is installed by the mechanical HVAC Contractor not the Electrician. The Electrician only supplies and installed the shutoff switch outside next to the VAV Box and connects to the VAV Box inside the electrical box connected on the side of the VAV Box. My question is, Is the VAV Box considered an Electrical Equipment that would require 36 inches of clearance to access to electrical box on the side of the VAV Box that has a seperate power shutoff switch just outside the box? I interpret the NEC Code to refer to electrical panels, switches, breakers, disconnects, and electrical gear that would normaly be located inside an electrical equipment room that would require 36 inches of clearance. Please reply.
