Check out the following link. It's to an Electrical DIYer forum. The one titled "Wits End" is really scary.

That is scary! Humorous, but very scary indeed.

Stop it! You're killing me here.

ROTFLMAO.

Seriously - have you noticed most of the posters over there are plumbers?

Re: Electrical DIYer Forum

This isn't a case of "the blind leading the blind." It's "the ignorant leading the gullible."

Re: Electrical DIYer Forum

I wouldn't laugh too hard about plumbers. They get to do some of our work and we don't get to do any of theirs. Also we are second in line to plumbers when it comes for the homeowner to call for service emergencies. ("Dear, the light switch doesn't work in the den and I changed the bulb." "Use the table lamp." "Dear, the hot water doesn't work in the bathroom sink." "Call the plumber.")

Back about 1997, I was called into the city inspections office on a complaint. I did a service call where I replaced an element on a electric water heater. Some how a local plumbing contractor found out and narced on me to the AHJ.

"Electricians can't do plumbing", he said.

"It has wires on it", said I. "If I install it wrong the worst that could happen is I would get wet. If you do it wrong, you could get electrocuted. I ought to be able to change out the whole tank. What's more dangerous, two water pipes or 240 volts?"

The inspector removed his glasses and stared at me. "You can change the elements, but leave the the water heater change outs to him."

A plumber touching anything with wires, IMHO.

One of the reasons I am inclined to be a DIY is a plumber who came out to fix my water heater once. I wasn't home, but he decided to do my wife a favor and bypass the thermostat so she'd have some hot water until he could get back with the parts to repair it. You all know how that turned out. She had plenty of hot water.

Re: Electrical DIYer Forum

I am changing out a bath fan now that installed by a plumber 10 years ago. He took power from the lighting circuit, took the hot to the fan, ran the switch legs from the fan to the switch. The hot feed was romex, the switch legs were thhn. The nail on box was cut down to fit between the wall and the vent stack and attached to the stud with a screw.

Re: Electrical DIYer Forum

Has anyone read the post posted by the moderator called backfeed. Now when we think of backfeed I think in terms of two hots from two diffrent breakers on the same circuit. In this goofballs situation it sounds as if he has tripping breakers. But thats just the start of his problem. I can only imagine the nonboxed open joint wrapped with tape he has feeding his bathroom. And hes the stinking moderator. I feel ridgid is definitely endangering many people by allowing that forum to stay open. Does anyone know of a way to contact ridgid so we can inform them of our disgust for this website. thanks

SouthernB, Why bother?

He ended up getting his electrician uncle to come over. Problem solved. Given the bad description, I'm amazed anyone ventured a guess to the problem in the first place. :D

Sad to say..but if they don't misinform the public, who will? Some other website.
