we have been having problems with our automatic gate operator. The installation company is saying the grounding is not adequate. They have given me a quote to install three 30 foot ground rods per unit for a total of 90 feet per unit this seems over done to me I am in charleston SC. Are they right he also said it was a UL requirement???????

Re: electrical gate operators

Are they planning to drive the rods at the gate operator or at the electrical service?

Re: electrical gate operators

It is not possible to offer a solution (notwithstanding the installer?s proposed solution of installing lots of large ground rods), without first understanding the nature of the problem. What are the gates doing that they should not be doing (or not doing that they should do)? Also, can you give some details of the type of equipment that operates the gates? For example, are they ?pay as you enter? coin-operated gates? Are there pressure sensors in the pavement that automatically open the gate whenever a car approaches? Are there keypads that permit entry when the right code is punched in? Is the problem with the control system (i.e., that permits or forbids entry) or with the gate motor operators (i.e., that move the gate from the closed to the open position)?

Re: electrical gate operators

You can install supplementary ground rods where ever and when ever you want. It has to be bonded to the equipment grounding conductor (green wire).
I doubt the ground rods will solve the problem...

Re: electrical gate operators

Vince can you give some more details about what kind of problem you are having. I can tell you right now ground rods are not going to do anything but lighten your pocket.

If it is lightning problems you need to look into TVSS.

Re: electrical gate operators

U.L. Requirement ????? I thought the N.E.C stipulated the requirements for electrical installations!!! Also grounding and bonding is for protecting life and equipment, NOT to facillitate the correct oporation of electrical equipment.

Re: electrical gate operators

There are some types of equipment for which a proper grounding system is essential to their proper operation. But motor-operated gates are not among them.

Vince: Are you going to chime in with more information, or shall I close this topic and move on to other questions?
