I am looking for the NEC requirements for our electric hoist installations. We have several DeMag Hoists throughout the facility that have a lengthy cord tie wrapped to the boom, running down the wall and into a 110v outlet. Some concerns have been raised as to the safety of this type installation.

Re: Electrical Hoist Code Requirements

NEC Article 400.8 (2002 version) lists installations that are not permitted to use a flexible cord. One is as a substitute for permanent wiring. Another is where attached to the building structure (e.g., the wall you mentioned).

NEC Article 610 addresses cranes and hoists. I could not find a paragraph that explicitly addressed your question, but I think that your installation might violate 610.11. That article lists the acceptable wiring methods, and does not list flexible cord.
