I am working on a natural gas compressor station in Calif. I was approached by one of the operators and asked about ESD (Emergency Shut Down) systems being mentioned in the NEC. I don't recall any mention of them in NEC and thought it more likely that they would be something found in NFPA. Can you shed any light on this?

514.11(A), (B) & (C) require a circuit disconnect for all circuits leading to or through dispensing equipment.

Article 514 applies to motor fuel dispensing facilities including Compressed Natural Gas stations.

If you are talking about a compressor station built to transport the natural gas (like the CS I work at) as opposed to a motor fuel dispensing facility, you are correct - there is no NEC code requiring an ESD system.

The requirement of an ESD system is usually in accordance with compliance with ANSI/ISA standards, insurance company requirements, or government requirements (US DOT or state requirements).
