So how does the code presume that all receptacles in a garage will have an appliance plugged into them?

Re: Electrical Outlet Height /Garage

I don't know that there is a specific height requirement but someone had suggested that I mount garage receptacles higher than 48" aff because if a homeowner were to store or lean a sheet of plywood or sheetrock against the wall it would clear the bottom of the receptacle. It made sense to me so I've been mounting them at about 54" aff ever since.

rcarrol: I owe you an apology as I was perusing the 99NEC handbook and happened on this very topic by accident. The handbook said that it did not consider the space behind freezers inaccessible. Guess they never met my relatives. single recept unless dedicated space with freezer in it, which would make it inaccessible.

Re: Electrical Outlet Height /Garage

A local addendum here says a dedicated non gfi single receptacle will have a label appliance use only....How that stops MR. Homeowner from using it as a branch receptacle is beyond me.Also if you dun a dedicated circuit it has to be a single receptacle.

If you install an outlet less than 18" in a garage, regardless of residential or commercial, you will have to install EY(Explosion Proof)fittings. Read NEC 505-9(c) Class I Zone 2. The reasoning is that should you spill gasoline or other flammable liquids, the vapors will dissipate before reaching the 18" mark. Look at all GAS water heaters and you will see that they are all installed on 18" minimum platforms.
No.

Re: Electrical Outlet Height /Garage

though not directly stayted, would not 505.4 "Documentation for Industrial Occupancies" exculde residencal. we are not requierd to class and document our garages.

Re: Electrical Outlet Height /Garage

Residential garages are considered "Ordinary", that is, they are not classified.
If they were, we would never be allowed to have a freezer or refigerator in a garage!
I agree with this post above and the original poster!
