Electrical student needs help

My instructor posed this question for me to research, hoping somebody can help please:

In Article 334.15 (B) Protection from physical damage
The 2005 code book states: "Cable shall be protected from physical damage where necessary by rigid metal conduit, intermediate metal conduit, electrical metallic tubing , Schedule 80 PVC rigid nonmetallic conduit or other approved means."

What and where would I be able to find out what the "other approved means" are? Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the reply. So that would mean basically what the local building codes state, and products that are UL or CSA listed for that type of work?

Sort-of. What he means is to check with what your AHJ will approve as other effective means to accomplish the same protection. This may be just a simple consultation with the electrical inspector or could be a formal statement from the building official.

Listing is a good way to help an AHJ to determine if they are going to "approve" a means of protection but not a requirement.

Items used for protecting a NM cable from physical damage aren't required to be listed.

"other approved means" is as it suggests, methods approved that are outside those defined by the NEC. Typically, as mentioned here, that would be the local AHJ or Authority Having Jurisdiction. Most likely the local city, county, or state government body assigned responsibility for adopting and/or defining the code.

not long ago I found that I could notch 10' of 4x4 post, lay direct burial cable in the notch and as long as I used approved nail plates this was protecting it from physical damage. this was an outdoor light post.

my point is the "other approved method" might be thrown in there for these not so common ways to protect your wire.

just a thought.
