getting ready to wire my new home. where/who can i buy my supplies? Home Depot or electrical contractor?

Ace, buying 12/2 and 14/2 NM, supply houses can't get down to HD or Lowes prices. Most other items can be bought cheaper thru a supplier.
Here's what you should do, make the best estimated list you can from "rough in" thru "trim out", (include fixtures if possible) take it to as many suppliers as you can or is convenient in your area and have them all price it. Let them know you are shopping it out to others.
This can be called "package buy out"

Chances are ace isn't an EC and supply houses often have several prices depending on who you are.Ace you likely will not get good prices from a supply house.If you have a friend that is EC or work for an EC buy thru them.Most of the prices at HD are close to right.There will be some items that they will gouge you on.
Try it this way make the entire list best as you can including trim.Take it straight to the manager (cut out sales commision)of a few local supply houses.Ask them for a total price and be prepared to pay up front for the entire order.
Not sure about HD but scotties use to have outside salesmen and that shelf price might get some discounts.

Might add this advice too.Some items like 10-3 for dryer or 10-2 water heater /ac only come in 250 feet at supply house and they won't cut them.You might save at HD on buying a cut length.Other big wire can be bought my the foot.Wish you good luck and hope you have read up on local codes and what ever NEC year they are on
