The homeowner's poor judgement(if they didn't have detectors) should not release the electrician of liability for poor craftsmanship.

You are correct that any issue of the dwelling NOT having smoke detectors does not change the responsibility of the electrician.
However, if the dwelling did not smoke detectors then it should be mentioned clearly in the article that the tragedy might have been prevented by properly installed smoke detectors.

I wonder why his contractors license was revoked 11 months prior to this incident. Perhaps he had problems in the past with shoddy work?
