Does the 2008 code require the grounding electrode conductor of a building or structure to be connected at that main water meter can it be connected to the water piping system closer by the service entrance? What if your service is 500 feet away? I hope to get a few opinions on this please.
Thanx

I am confused. The Code does not care about the water meter except that it be bonded around. The Code also requires the water piping to be bonded within five feet of where it enters the building. As far as I see, that is not negotiable. :-?

I don't think so Mark. The intent is to be nearest the actual ground.
In case some plumber puts a plastic jumper in the line some where.

Going in the same direction as Don, does the building have a structural steel frame?

Steel beam type constuction in concrete foundation. I believe the building steel may be used but like Charlie said the piping needs to be bonded at the
1st five feet. That bond wire for the bonding doesn't need be the electrode or does it? Also I mean the water main not the meter sorry.

Here's an example of bonding jumpers from Mike Holt:

You can jumper the water pipe to the building steel and then connect your GEC from the service disconnect to the building steel. There is no need to run a GEC 500' to the water pipe.

Grounding Electrode???

Grounding Electrode???

Is the water pipe a grounding electrode?
Interesting thought. If it is a grounding electrode, it shall be bonded withing 5 feet of entry to the building. However, if is not a grounding electrode, the metallic water piping still has to be bonded but the location of the bonding connection is not specified.
