I'm not sure if i'm in the correct section to post this. I'm not very familiar with elevator fire alarm systems and any light you can share on it would be great. There is an existing elevator that has smoke detector on first and second floor, heat detector in shaft, and fire protection in elev shaft. Based on the project manager of this job, he said that 4 relays are required for the elevator. 1 for the SD in first and second floor, 1 for machine rm fire hat, and 1 for heat detector in elevator shaft. Currently they have 3 relays. A relay is required for the heat detector based on the project manager. 4 relays are required for the state florida elevator/electrical code based on the project manager. Can someone please refer me on where it says that in code. also, by adding another relay to the control box. presume im going to need to run a new cable/conduit to this existing heat detector in the shaft? is there any other requirements that i must implement? How is the existing heat detector operating now, just connected directly to the fire alarm system of the facility?

Thank you!!

The basics of elevators is Phase I recall to the primary or alternate floor, shunt trip for heat detection, and maybe flashing hat for Phase II if the smoke in the hoistway or elevator machine room is activated. So, the PM has the right count but not quite the right mapping.

what if the existing building does not have a fire alarm system. Is it required to integrate a firealarm system into the elevator? or will that be integrated into the elevator controller? or do i need to specify a new fire alarm panel just for the elevator?

You can install a fire alarm panel whose sole purpose is to accommodate elevator recall. Per NFPA 72-2016:

21.3.2* In facilities without a required building fire alarm sys-
tem, fire alarm initiating devices used to initiate elevator
Phase 1 Emergency Recall Operation shall be connected to
either a nonrequired building fire alarm system or a dedicated
function fire alarm control unit that shall be designated as
“elevator recall control and supervisory control unit,” perma-
nently identified on the dedicated function fire alarm control
unit and on the record drawings.

I have done this exactly once in my career so far.

aha, that is great!! i will probably end up doing that because currently the existing building has no fire alarm system. thank you for your help!!!!
