NFPA 2002, A.6.15.4.4 states "Upon activation of the heat detector used for elevator power shutdown, there should be a delay in the activation of the power shunt trip. This delay should be the time that it takes the elevator cab to return from the top of the hoist way to the lowest recall level." This is new and makes far more sense than before, but I checked with the elevator manufacturers here and they do not have an auxiliary contact to tell us when the cab has returned and the door open. Have the elevator guys provided this time, do you add a timer, or something else? It sure beats the possibility of trapping someone in the cab.

Re: Elevator Heat Detector Timer

The code article from NFPA 72 6.15.4.4 does not mention anything about the delay in activation of the shunt trip. It is only in the Appendix portion of the article, which is not considered code. Many (if not most) AHJ's will not permit the delay as it is not code, and the timer circuit, whether mechancial or software based through the FACP, is not standard product available in the fire alarm component arena.

I also hope some day they make it code too :) .
