Elevator Machine Room Disconnects

A look at Article 620.51 indicates that the location of elevator disconnects need to be, something about, accessible to qualified persons. I believe there is a requirement for proximity to the door. Is there not? Has this changed OR should I be looking in the, in this case MA, elevator code for this.

Also,is there any reason why said disconnect or disconnects can’t be. Circuit breaker. And lastly, does each device need to be isolated or could they be as part of a panel (for rooms with multiple elevators obviously)?

Thanks

We typically install a panel in the elevator machine room when there are mulitple elevators. In NYC there needs to be a disconnecting means reachable right inside of the door so we install separate disconnects at the door. We have in the past mounted a distribution board next to the door. Often our spec wants both the panel and separate disconnects.

Is the exit sign also a NYC requirement? Seems like an odd place for one, unless its a really big elevator machine room.

Good question. The room was about 75' long and had only one exit. Could be a design spec.

Thank you gentlemen - Wonder if I could impose with another question.

The client wants to put an Equipment Branch panel in the elevator machine room that will have nothing to do with the elevators. Rather it is to serve two Air Handling Units. It's a convenient place given the proximity to the new AHU's, but very counterintuitive to me to use the room for anything non-elevator related. Is there a prohibition against doing that either in the elevator code or elsewhere. I'm in Mass by the way. Not that I don't appreciate the feedback from NY or for that matter anywhere else. Just if you were wondering and you happen to know the proclivities in Bay State.

Thanks again
