Was just turned down on a machine room because the door infringed on the 3 1/2' clearance per 110-26(a)(1). The inspector quoted 620-72 which i can't seem to find in the code. Any one???

620.72 isn't in my copy either. Have you checked for any local ammendments?

If the stuff can be serviced with power off, they could waive the requirement too...

Re: Elevator machine rooms

Paragraph 620-72 was still in the NEC for 1993 but was removed in 1996.

"620-72 Clearance around control panels and disconnecting means. Sufficient clear working space shall be provided around control panels and disconnecting means to provide safe and convenient access to all live parts of the equipment necessary for maintenace and adjustment. The minimum clear working space about live parts on control panels and disconnecting means shall be no less than that specified in Section 110-16"

Re: Elevator machine rooms

Maybe he meant to say;
2002 NEC 670.5 Clearance.
Where the conditions of maintenance and supervision ensure that only qualified persons service the installation, the dimensions of the working space in the direction of access to live parts operating at not over 150 volts line-to-line or line-to-ground that are likely to require examination, adjustment, servicing, or maintenance while energized shall be a minimum of 750 mm (2? ft). Where controls are enclosed in cabinets, the door(s) shall open at least 90 degrees or be removable.
However, this does not deal with elevators.
