Elevator on Generator

We recently designed a project with a hydraulic elevator. The entire building is on backup generator. The local elevator inspector is requiring a cable back to the ATS to know when the generator is running. Is this a new code? Never ran into this before.

It may be a building or elevator code but I don't believe it is an NEC issue

Sounds like something in the control specs. Might be in the elevator codes though but unsure.

I do know however some elevator control centers will run the elevator at a slower speed on generator. This allows for a smaller generator and less inrush/ regenerative kick back.
