Thank you for your replies.

Would this not be in the 'building or fire code' requirments.? I dont see anything in the NEC that pertains to this.

it is in nfpa 72 6.16.3.5

A lobby smoke detector shall be located on the ceiling within 21ft of the centerline of each elevator door within the elevator bank under control.

I was wondering how the rest of you interpret this.
We are doing this work on a coast guard base so there is no real AHJ or anyone who wants to take responsibility for the decision.

Well isn't the Army Corp of Engineers involved, or some other goverment agency?

In my finite experience it always been on the top the elevator well, the smoke outside the elevator door was usually less than a couple of feet.

Not 21 feet ... I don't think the FA guys will be on the job tommorrow, but hey I'll ask them when I see them...

On this job there is no core of engineers. This is a small elevator rehab job. Would you ask them and get back to me.
Thank you

I'm sitting incorrect on this job, the FA guy said nothing was there in our elevators ceiling, not even a heat detector. we have a 5 story/.

It really comes down to Building Code issues as he stated, type of structure and total number of story and whats in the Spec's, as for the firealarm itself, whether it is self-ontained on not

alaskan JW,

This is just the way I read it. #1, it is for "lobby" ceilings. #2 Some "lobbies"

can have very high ceilings. #3 it actually depends on the punctuation in the

sentence you wrote, where are the comma's ?

Remember, this is just me, I say centered on the elevator doors, on the ceiling,

and no further away then 21'. I say it can be closer also.
