I have an opportunity to complete an interesting project that has been designed with a 600A service with fused disconnect on the exterior of the building, this feeds an MDP directly behind the disconnect; the MDP feeds 2 - 200A MLO panels, 1 150A MLO panel and 3 large chilers each 100A. The customer amost choked when they seen the equipment cost. My question; can we eliminate the disconnect outside along with the MDP inside and simply feed a wireway from the meter (600A feed through) and drop into the 3 panels (making them MB and the 3 disconnects (fused) ? The panels would be inside opposite the meter. Thanks!

AFAICT, that would be code compliant, provided the 3 disconnects are also inside opposite meter, and all six disconnecting means meet the six handle rule.

Next question is whether there is any local restriction to such, and also whether the POCO will connect such an installation...

Grouping

Grouping

Yeah, I thought it would be ok, since I am in the immediate area and all 6 disconnects are grouped. (and I meet the rule of 6). I guess I will call the POCO tomorrow and ask them if they would connect and since I have an inspection tomorrow with the guy who would ultimately inspect this, maybe I can look a bit more intelligent. Thanks, sometimes you just need another set of eyes...

Double check with the PoCo that the AFC is not too high for the MDPs you intend to create. That the main Fused Disconnect may have had current limiting fuses and been used to lower the AFC at the MDP to an acceptable level.
