A new one on me. I have not herd of this till now.
I have been informed by a building inspector
that in 2003 the National building code extended
the emergency back up egress lights to the out side
of building above the doors of required exits of type
A buildings.
Can anyone confirm this .if so heads up.:-?

I know here in Jersey you need a single light outside the door powered off the egress lights for that door. we have been doing this for a few years. Some local inspectors do not make you do it if the signs were existing, but others do?

Well if you do a school all the outside lighting by doors and covered walkways need to be egress and some parking lot pole lights if in a area of emergency egress.

Some walkways have 50 to 100 fixtures running down them and engineer on the job forgot the added load what a mess.

If its a single light .. then it needs to have a dual element lamp in it ... or you need to use twin heads .. we have been using twin LV heads for years

That is the definition of the extent of the Means of Egress. In Appendix A this is clarified and there's a small difference for egress lighting. It states that lighting only needs to be provided to a "safe distance" from the building. You do not need to put parking lot lights on the emergency system to get a lighted path to the street or alley.

Now, what is a "safe distance" is not defined. Here we've got an unwritten rule that 10' feet away is considered safe. But if the exit is above or below grade we are often asked to provide lighting on the stairs or ramp until grade level.

And after 4 years of looking and asking I finally found a decent LED wall pack for this exterior egress lighting. Each LED is a lighting element, and LED loves the cold temperatures, and this actually has enough punch to get 1 fc average up to 10' away from the building when mounted over the door. If anyone's got others I'd love to put some competition on the fixture schedule. http://www.cooperlighting.com/common/solutions.cfm?pg=Products&solutionID=18&categoryID=211 I was told the Lumark is about $350.
