In MA we are required to separate the emergency and normal power electric rooms. Is anybody aware of other states that have a similar requirements, specifically Maine or are you allowed to have one electric room for normal and emergency power as long as it is sprinkled?

Thank you in advance.

Re: Emergency Electric Rooms

It is important to note that Article 700 requires the emergency equipment to be remote from the normal power equipment so that a fault or fire in the normal equipment will not affect the emergency equipment. They can't be in the same room unless separated by a fire-rated wall.

Could you define "emergency equipment"? Would two panelboards, one emergency power and one normal power in an electric closet on the 40th floor need separation? Or do you mean that the generator and associated equipment must be separate?

Re: Emergency Electric Rooms

The specific criteria can be found in chapter 5 of NFPA 110, I'll look up the wording tomorrow, but I think it deals more with the EPSS being seperated from the service equipment of the normal supply than it does with downstream distribution panels.

I have the 2002 NFPA, and it may be a different chapter than your reference.

7.2 Location.

7.2.1 The EPS shall be installed in a separate room for Level 1 installations. EPSS equipment shall be permitted to be installed in this room.

7.2.2.1 Transfer switches shall be permitted to be installed in the normal electrical service room where twice the clearance required by Article 110.26(A) of NFPA 70 , National Electrical Code, exists between equipment enclosures.

EPS - Emergency Power Supply

EPSS - Emergency Power Supply System

Level 1 - Systems shall be installed when failure of the equipment to perform could result in loss of human life or serious injuries.

Level 2 - Systems shall be installed when failure of the EPSS to perform is less critical to human life and safety and where the AHJ shall permit a higher degree of flexibility than provided by a Level 1 system

Re: Emergency Electric Rooms

Good morning Pierre, I am still using the 99.

"Location" was found in 5.2 and the first sentence of 5.2.1 was identicle to what you posted.

It continued with 5.2.2

5.2.2 EPSS, equipment shall not be installed in the same room where the normal electrical service is installed.

Exception: Transfer switches shall be permitted to be installed in the normal electrical service room where twice the clearance required by Article 110.26(A) of NFPA 70 , National Electrical Code, exists between equipment enclosures.

It appears 7.2.2.1 was an exception to 5.2.2 in the 99

Re: Emergency Electric Rooms

I'm torn between NEC 700 and NFPA 110 7.2 on the requirements on located a stand-by emergency generator for used for life safety emergency egress lighting in a supermarket application.
The NFPA leads me to belive that this 45kw generator cannot be in the same room and normal power electrical gear? They plans call for the generator and ats to be located in a room that doesn't have the main service entrance gear but does have the rest of the distribution gear.
Can I locate it there or do I have to have it in a sperate fire rated room?
