Emergency Exit circuit

Where, and in what code, is it permissible to supply exit, and emergency lighting from the local lighting circuit ahead of the light switch?

As far as The NEC, you can look at700.12(E).
There is more information in NFPA 101

I have read 700-12 (twice) and I don't see it but would like to.
Could you be a little more specific as to where and what year CODE. I am looking in 99'.

Doug, This is the same in the 1999 code.

700.12(e) Unit Equipment

It is in the last paragraph, also read the exception.
