Emergency Generator control wiring

I was under the impression that Large high voltage(4160) emergency generators (i.e. for hospitals, or critical defense systems) control wiring had to be in rigid or imc conduit that fed the control panel on the generator itself, (or flexible steal conduit if flexibility is needed) ,however I have not found it in the 2008 NEC. I only found where control wiring for fire pumps had that requirement ,NEC 2008 695.14(E). Seems rather odd to me that the fire pump controls would need that extra protection requirement but the generator controls that would run it would not. I guess it was only 'specs' on jobs that I have seen. 1/2" Emt conduit just seems not suffient protection in this area with only screw type couplings and connectors.
