Emergency generator serving two buildings

A client will potentially have two separate building. Each will have separate services from the utility. The client would like one emergency generator to serve both buildings. Each building will be free standing.

We can not find anything in the codes that prevents this, but it seems that it will present some grounding and bonding issues since each building is a stand alone building with separate grounding electrode systems.

It seems that this arrangement may have operational and safety issues.

Has anyone encountered an installation like this or know of a section in the code that would prevent this?

The grounding shouldn't be an issue if you use a 4-pole transfer switches.

Seems odd to have one generator serve a building that would be on another property. What if one building is sold?

If the buildings are located on two separately deeded properties, you should check with the building department. I have done this for nonessential equipment, but not required emergency systems. The owner was required to have an agreement, including easements recorded with the deeds.
