Need to ask the pros about this. Doing an estimate for an assisted living complex. I was asked by the General Contractor not include the building generator because theres not going to be any. I agreed but replied that alot of emergancy and exit lights would need to be added so that batteries would light the way of exit. After hanging-up I started to think the generator would still be needed for emergencies, such as : the E-call or Nurse call system , people that could very well be dependant upon a life safety machine. Can someone shed some light on this or at least point me in the right direction to get this resolved such as State Codes, JACHO, OSHA, or equiv. Our estimate is due pretty quick here but my intentions are not to include it and referance "NOT Responsible ect.ect."
Thanks guys, want to be able to back-up my thoughts with a referance.

look at 517.40 exception.. Essential electrical system for nursing homes and limited care facilities,,, it all depend on types of care too

What do the prints want?

Adding/removing a gennie would make a pretty big difference to the electrical 1-line. ATS's, emergency panels, feeders, etc. Also, the mechanical designer would have to include fuel/vent/exhaust provisions.

As far as a requirement or not, you might talk to your AHJ of the life safety persuasion to see what's required for egress lighting. If this is a facility under the state hospital juridstictions, they typiclaly have very high standards.

The GC asked that we not estimate with the generator because of cost, I replied that Emerg. and Exit lights would require a battery back up and he said " it sure would be cheaper than a generator". all I can think of at this point is to not include the gen. and stipulate in the estimate it was not wanted by the GC. Then if awarded the contract have him put it in writing so that I wouldn't be responsable for costs when the AHJ or whom ever wants it.

Does this sound alwrite or would others do it differently?
