emergency generators

I have done a lot of manual transfer panels for generators and they have always had a four prong twist lock plug which I would wire into what was essentially a sub panel with a "make one break one" interlock that prevented back feed into the main panel. In this sub panel the neutral and ground are isolated and are fed either from the generator or the panel with a separate ground and neutral. The other day, I ran across a generator that had a 3 prong twist lock receptacle. Now if I hook that into a transfer panel, how do I account for the ground and neutral isolation during power loss conditions when the generator is supplying power to the transfer panel.I hope I've explained myself clearly.

Re: emergency generators

You do NOT. You cannot use a straight 240v receptacle as a feed.
If the generator does not have a 4-wire receptacle the genset cannot be used.

Whay are you still building transfer panels? Gentran panels are so much simpler.
