Emergency Lighting on a Generator

I have been taught that emergency egress lighting must be placed on its own Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS), if other loads (e.g. elevators, stair press. fans, etc.) are also included on the emergency generator. However, I have been unable to locate the code that requires this. Can anyone help me track down the verbage in the code? It is likely in NFPA, if not the NEC.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Also, if the IBC or an amended version of it is the building code in your area, Chapter 27 in the IBC is very helpfull in determining which loads are emergency loads (NEC Article 700) or legally required standby (Article 701). Anything else would be optional standby (Article 702).

Thanks for the courteous welcome! I checked NEC 700.9(B)...I see in 700.9(B)(5)c that "Legally required and optional standby circuits shall not originate from the same vertical switchboard section, panelboard enclosure, or individual disconnect enclosure as emergency circuits." This seems to support that they cannot share an ATS, though it is not as clear as I would like...Is this the verbage that I need?
