Emergency Lighting Running Time

Hello All,

I do recall that I have seen a requirement (can't remember where) that the lighting emergency battery system is allowed to have a reduced running time (less than 1 1/2hr) if it's backed up be the generator. My questions:

1. Which code that allow us to have a reduced running time? for some reason, I thought it was NFPA 101 but I couldn't find it.
2. Does the inverter system needs to be back-up by emergency generator (dedicated ATS for emergency system) to get the reduced battery running time or it can be backed-up by standby generator shared with standby loads and still get reduced battery running time?

Thanks in advance.

If you really have an emergency generator with a dedicated LS ATS, then the battery would be totally optional (in most cases). So the battery run time could be less than 90 min, or zero.

If its a standby generator shared with other loads, then I would agree with the previous reply.

There might possibly be an exception to the 10 sec. transfer time if you have battery backup. But I'm not sure offhand. It wouldn't be a very common setup.
