emergency lighting

in a high rise condo which has a back up generator is the emergency lights and exit lights required to be battery back up. the stairs are inside where there is no emergency lights if the generator does not start when there is no power. can you please help with a code article as i am having a hard time trying to locate a code article. nec or lift safety 101 or ?

The installation of emergency lighting is covered in Article 700. You can use a generator for emergency lighting as long as it meets the reqirements of 700.12.
