We routinely put lights in electric rooms that are on emergency (i.e. either on a generator or with bodine ballast, etc). But does the NEC require this and if so, may they be switched on and off as opposed to using a bypass relay around the switch in the event of the building going to generator?

thanks,

Mike

But does the NEC require this

The requirement for emergency lighting comes from the building codes. The NEC only tells you how to wire them when required.

Typically an electrical room doesn't require emergency lighting.

I usually always specify an emergency light(s) in the electrical rooms.....and if the rooms big enough, I'll add a bodine(s), with or without a generator.

Good design, rather than code required. Nice to be able to see if something has tripped if you can't find the flashlight.
