There's a graphic Mike Holt's book that says emergency power isn't permitted to be connected ahead of the service disconnect. Is this a new 2011 NEC rule? I thought one of the acceptable sources for emergency power was connecting ahead of the main disconnect. The graphic shows it's a code change, but I wanted to confirm...

'Emergency' power Article 700 no, not ahead of the main.

Legal required standby power Article 701, or optional standby power Article 702 yes you can do ahead of the main.
 
Oh ok, I don't know why I thought emergency power can be ahead of main. I feel I've heard that fire pumps connected that way
 
Thanks. So is a fire pump considered 'emergency' load with an exception to connect ahead of the main? If not, I don't understand how it wouldn't be considered emergency considering it can be essential for the safety of life in the event of a fire
