How would you handle this? Customer calls our service after hours during an outage and a huge ice storm and wants to have a trailer mounted generator delivered and have us do the interconection. how would you make the interconection so that it was safe enough to leave for up to a week and easy to reconect after the power is restored. sounds easy enough?
Yes this is a very very afluent neighborhood. service is a single phase 400 amp overhead service with a meter disconect outside

Re: Emergency power

If You are going to directly connect it to the existing service.....
the safe way would be to replace the disco with a 400 amp manual transfer switch listed for use as service equipment.

Re: Emergency power

Meter Disconnect? If it is a combination meter/disconnect, you could open the switch and remove the conductors from the load side of the switch during the outage period. If it is just a standard meterbase, you could have the power company remove the meter. If you have a good rapport with the utility providers, they may even give you permission to pull the meter yourself. The main thing, of course, is to ensure that there is no way to let generator power get backfed into the utility grid.
Best solution is to follow Megawatts advice above!!! A transfer switch is, by far, the most reliable and safe way to isolate generator power from utility power. But they can be expensive!!!

Re: Emergency power

I have a bid in now for one. Almost identical job description, this setup will be used every time the power is out.
Horse Farm, portable Gen on trailer, pulled in & hooked up when needed.

Re: Emergency power

This was a temporary job at a large home that had lost power in an ice storm. the homeowner had called united rental and had a 85 kw machine delivered and wanted us to make the connection to feed the property. horsebarn, pool, the whole deal. We disconected at the weatherhead, taged
pulled the meter, stagged and then pulled the lugs to the disconect and connected to the breaker. met with the POCO later that week and did a reconect with them. just wondering if anyone else had done similar work.
