Emergency Shut Down Switches

Is there anything in the NEC that requires emergency shut down switches on power tools in a wood wooking shop? (i.e. table saws, drill press, tin bending machines, etc.) Do these switches have to be on the machines or can they be some where else in the room?

Re: Emergency Shut Down Switches

The nec does not cover emergency shut down switches for your application. But in article 430 motors, if automatic starting of the motor can result in injusry then manual reset has to be used. see section 430.125(4). Do your tools over overload protection? If they are thermally protected then you'll have to install an inline device that is manually reset. The rules you are looking for may be in an OSHA standard or perhaps NFPA 79, Machine Tool Standard
