Is there an article in the N.E.C regarding emergency shutdown switches at each point of egress from a boiler room ?

I don't think so. Requirements of this type come from Building Codes, not the Electrical Code. But I regret that I do not know a code number or article number. Perhaps someone else can fill in the blanks?

Right here.
With regard to boilers, from the IMC:

1006.8 Electrical requirements. The power supply to the elec -
trical control system shall be from a two-wire branch circuit that
has a grounded conductor, or from an isolation transformer with
a two-wire secondary. Where an isolation transformer is pro -
vided, one conductor of the secondary winding shall be
grounded. Control voltage shall not exceed 150 volts nominal,
line to line. Control and limit devices shall interrupt the un -
grounded side of the circuit. A means of manually disconnecting
the control circuit shall be provided and controls shall be ar -
ranged so that when deenergized, the burner shall be inoperative.
Such disconnecting means shall be capable of being locked in
the off position and shall be provided with ready access.

Best I can find. I know that there are more specific local codes on this matter.

Check with the local plumbing/mechanical AHJ. They might have a local ammendment stipulating more then what Marc gave you. I think Marc hit it though...I was too slow...

Boiler code should cover this. We installed one a few years back and the state code required a kill it button that could be readily slapped without breaking your stride at each exit.

Check your state's boiler rules. You'll likely also find that you need to get the operators licensed.

A boiler that blows is nasty. A friend who was in the Navy grossed us all out with details of the steam burned survivors. I steer clear of them.

regular switches

regular switches

I maintain three retail locations that are heated with boilers. Each one has a kill switch mounted on the wall next to the exit of the boiler room. They are all just regular light switches......
