where is the code which states how a box must be supported. hypothetical situation: a box coming up from underground is changed over from pvc to ridgid. it is not by a building which it can be supported to...let's say it's in the middle of the yard. what article states the proper way to support this box and pipe?

In general a box must be "rigidly and securely fastened in place"
The code really does not tell us how to do this just that it must be done.
There are products available for this or you could put in a pressure treated post and mount to that.
Whatever means will have to be rigid and secure.
There are ways to support a box with the raceways but you must follow all the rules to do so.
For this look at 314.23(E) and 314.23(F).
