My wife loves all these "Ghost Hunter" shows. So this weekend I watch
one of them and EMF levels keep coming up. They have this cheap looking
meter that they keep waving around, I swear it looks like an analog
meter you can buy from a big box store. They say some elevated
EMF levels indicate "Ghost" activity while at times the elevated
EMF is coming from the electrical system in the house. This particular
show they run a ground wire from some point they didn't show, and
the EMF's went away, while other times it's "Ghost activity."
I'm no engineer but, this all sounds like "Smoke and Mirrors" to me.
What do you guys know about this subject?

Well it ain't ghosts but emf's do exist. Take a ground wire and connect it to the neutral after a load and I bet your meter will read emf's. Also go to a switch box that has two circuits in it and tie the neutrals from both circuits together and watch the meter move. Another common way to produce emf's besides just turning on anything electrical is to run a circuit where the neutral is not run with the ungrounded conductor.

In fact one of our members Karl Riley has written a few books on emf's.

Yes I know EMF is real. I'm talking about all this "Ghost" hunter stuff
where they are contributing elevated EMF's to a "Ghost" presence.
I was telling my wife, if you notice they place these "EMF Meters" next to switch banks, of course there is going to be a magnetic field present.:D

Please be so kind as to define "ghost," and be sure to include in the definition the relationship of that word to magnetism. When I look up the word in my dictionary, I don't seem to find that relationship. :D

Just because you can't see it, charlieb, doesn't mean it not real...

Yes I agree it's ridiculous. I didn't make those shows I just watched
one. They also said that some people are senstive to "Elevated"
levels of EMF and can experience, nausea, fatigue, and headaches.
I don't see how this is possible but, there are a lot of things
I don't know. I guess someone sensitive to EMF wouldn't fare well
standing in a transformer vault.

EMF's is one of my favorite subjects..i tried to email those ghost hunter guys to read karl rileys book. the ghost hunters dont really know what they are talking about when it comes to EMF's. but i do believe the theory that EMF's can cause people to feel like there being watched or other creepy feelings. my father was in his basement and said theres something weird in the laundry room. he said he senses something looking at him when hes in there. i went down with the milligauss meter i bought. its a single axis meter from magneticsciences.com i found a high level magnetic field near the furnace coming off of a transformer.

another thing to add. we got a service call from a guy that we thought was crazy. he had a gaussmeter and wanted us to fix the magnetic waves and said he could feel them in his skin. we all thought it was funny but what ive read and learned now i believe it was true and there actually was a problem

I have a customer whose good friend gets sick from high levels of EMF's. There have been some studies that link EMF to childhood Lukemia. It's enough to keep me from being around high levels if I can help it.

I'm going to do some research on EMF as it is a weak subject
for me. I've noticed a lot of people have mentioned Karl Riley's
book on EMF as a very good read. Is it a book or a paper on the
subject?

knob and tube gives off some high EMF's i experimented with the gaussmeter at a job i was at. i believe this is why we need to cut a slit between KO's in metal boxes when terminating knob and tube conductors.

I just watched another "Ghost" hunter show that says, you can turn your
Iphone into a EMF meter, just call...... Is this fact or fiction? It
sounds like fiction but I'm no expert in EMF.

They have to do something to make their shows interesting since the 'stars' of the show never actually appear. :D

In my highly educated professional engineering opinion (that was said with a great deal of sarcasm ;)), the whole thing is bologna. Bill Murray was a much better ghost hunter than any of the new guys on TV now, and the Sta-Puf marshmallow man was a much more believable ghost.
