EMT conduit installation

Does installation of EMT conduits for low voltage phone or data cabling require an electrical license? I have always been under impression that in a commercial building that EMT was required by general contracting laws that a certified electrician is the only one able to install by the code.

I've seen EMT installed in commercial buildings by plumbers. They use it to install their plastic pneumatic lines into control panels.

I agree...and Fire suppression systems use it as well.

What matters, at least where I am, is what the conduits are for.

If they are for wiring methods in the NEC you need to be a licensed electrician or an apprentice under the direct supervision of an electrician

I'd like to go on record promoting the idea that every stick of EMT installed anywhere for any reason must be installed by an electrician.

Sounds good to me, but I'm sure somewhere some IBEW brothers have already tried to go down that road.

Great. Then I could make tons of money making these:

Since I'll be licensed to make them!

Then again, I'll have to follow the Ansul system guys around all day helping with their installs!

I think the language used was something like this :
"It's just round stock until a wire gets pulled in it"

if someone can legally install the low voltage wiring, why would that not include the EMT?

I think any race way is included if it is a component of the low voltage system. In Mass. low voltage systems include the conduit the wire is run in.

I didn't have my camera with me Friday night, but if I did I would have taken a picture for sure!

I was at a gas station, and they had small flags on "poles" across the front of the lot. I thought, "Hmm, looks like EMT". Walked over, and sure enough, 1/2" EMT with the flags zip-tied to them.

I used to do some camping, and I guy I camped with a few times made himself a big canopy out of a large tarp and poles he made out of EMT and EMT fittings. Worked pretty slick.

Agreed. However this will never happen as long as the Home Depots, Lowes and such sell electrical supplies. Even the electrical supply houses will sell to anyone.

I would like to see a law passed nationally which would allow electrical supplies to only be sold to licensed individuals or their designated representatives, much in the manner of pulling a permit.

I wish you had not published the fittings pics.....some of the folks I inspect will use them on conduit runs now that they know they are on the market

They have available been for years.

They just aren't UL listed for using EMT as a raceway.

Let me repeat that for all who are thinking about it:
