Re: emt containint romex

Romex is not suitable for direct burial. Type UF cable is, and if that is what the cable is then yes it may be in the raceway, but only for the purpose of physical protection. Ie, it cannot be a complete raceway system and house the cable. This will be permitted, however, in the 2005 NEC.

Re: emt containint romex

I'm not looking it up, just from memory, so get corroberation.

Yes, the lagest dimention must be treated as a circular diameter for conduit fill.

Re: emt containint romex

I'm not sure about that.
I let someone borrow my NEC book that is why i signed up to this.
What i found on an inspection was a lamp post in the front of the property wired with EMT containing romex running undetground. The question that arose out of this was could emt be used on the exterior in this manner.

Re: emt containint romex

I'm working off a 96 code book hear but I believe the 02 says the same thing in that ent is not suitable for direct burial in earth. Is this the application you are talking about. 331-4 (5)

Re: emt containint romex

if it was UF cable then why not in EMT other than it is a waste of time and money as in a few years it will be rusted out? If this is on a new house i would say its stupid at todays prices, but if your asking if its illegal i dont think so.Now if its not UF then it is illegal

Re: emt containint romex

EMT cannot be installed in Earth unless is is protected against corrosion.

358.10(B) Corrosion Protection. Ferrous or nonferrous EMT, elbows, couplings, and fittings shall be permitted to be installed in concrete, in direct contact with the earth , or in areas subject to severe corrosive influences where protected by corrosion protection and judged suitable for the condition .
And any wire installed in any raceway in a wet location, has to be listed for wet location And to go one farther: Until just recently UL pulled the "wet location' listing for all the EMT connectors. There are some that are now listed but that has only been in the last few month's.
