The PoCo wouldn't even hook up to that in my area. If the point of attachment was something other than the EMT, like a piece of angle iron for instance, that would be okay. I hate to use EMT for anything outdoors anyhow. Looks like crap in a few years.

I saw a new home today that had 2" emt for service mast. It extended through roof. I have always used rigid. What is your take on this?? THANKS

It's odd and I doubt the power company rules allow it.

The NEC does not directly prohibit it.

I agree, thats what I thought. Code states that "mast must be able to support equipment"?? But then it states that pvc can be used if "wall mounted" and that really looks like a t--d in a punch bowl!!!

I just happened to think... are you sure it was EMT? IMC can fool you sometimes. Particularly since most weatherheads now are of the set screw type.

If you had an additional support, something like a unistrut frame common to commercial rooftop jobs, I think other factors getting considered like raintight compression fittings, arainged to drain, etc, you could use emt in some cases, but I sure wouldn't try doing it on a thru the roof mast job.
I have run service risers in emt on the side of multistory commercial meter jobs where the weatherhead is below the top of the parapet of the building and the whole thing is up against the side wall. If the building owner's paint the conduit at a regular interval it will last 50+ years. If they don't it won't last ten.

The only time that I have seen EMT used as a mast was on a barn, but it transitioned to IMC about 4' below the roof line. It was an odd job. I think it was the only time that I have seen PTFE tape used on conduit :)

I've noticed the trend is to use PVC when the POA is the house itself. Why don't you like the look? It's better than EMT sleeved SEU for 10', then SEU bare to the weatherhead.
