It has been common practice, around here at least, to run emt in the 'ribs' of the decking in commercial buildings. By 'ribs' I mean above the very top edge of a metal roof truss in the roof decking. AN inspector has told us that is no longer allowed due to concern self-tapping screws will pierce the pipe when the roof is repaired down the road. I do believe this is a valid concern, but I don't see anything new in the code relating to this issue (we recently have adopted the '08 version). I think 358.12 (1) could apply.

Has anyone else heard of this? I'm wondering if it's new interpretation from the top or just an isolated inspector. Or maybe some code I don't know. I'm in Michigan BTW.

that was done in the last code cycle....as roofers like to use 3in screws that were penetrating conduits as i remember.

I think that this would be good to do underneith all roofs. Even wood roofs have the potential for fasteners to come through the sheathing.

Agreed. I have seen many wood framed roof construction that utilizes rubber roofing and the same concern would be there as is found for the metal roof deck. Sounds like a proposal for the 2014 NEC....

Check out 300.4(E).

Or, you could have just asked the inspector..... make him earn his pay for a change.

300.4(E) is it. Thanks.

I would have asked him, but I wasn't on the job. Others have asked me because I tend to keep up on the code a little more than some of my coworkers
