I was in a code update class today and I heard the instructor mention in a commercial kit. pipe must be spaced off the wall at least a 1/4 in. to stop food from colecting there causing a health hazard. I searched for this but can not find it in the NEC. Anyone have any clue about this.

Re: emt spaced off the wall in kitchen

I assume he is speaking of 300.6(D) where they are washing down the FRP walls. The 1/4 in. is for an air gap to prevent water accumalation. Not aware of the food scenerio?.?

Yes 300.6 is it. This came up about GFCI protection for Commercial kits. The instructor suggests the washing down is why we need GFCI protection on all 120v plugs in commercial kits. I maybe misunderstood the food thing.

The 1/4" rule found in 300.6(C) is for indoor wet locations, places like dairies, slaughterhouses, etc that get washed down on a daily basis. Notice the exception for nonmetallic raceways.

As far as a commercial kitchen goes, it's not required but not a bad idea either.
