Enclosure as Junction or Pull Box

I have always heard that you cannot use an enclosure as a junction box or pull box but I cannot find the article in the NEC that prohibits this usage of the enclosure. I personally believe that this would be a bad practice but I have been asked to show the text in the code that prohibits this usage of an enclosure. Can someone please help me explain the reasoning behind this practice?

Regards

There is nothing wrong with doing this, the enclosure may need something to fasten the cover but if box fill is not exceeded all is fine.

Take a look at 312.8. Make sure you read the complete section if you are not looking at the 2011 code.

Enclosure is too general of a term. A junction or pull box is an enclosure. Can you tell us what it is you are asking about?
