enclosure thermostat

I have a thermostat mounted on the face of a 1900 box mounted to an enclosure wall with a knockout removed so it can sense the air inside the enclosure with the thermostst mounted on the outside. Is there any nec violation that anyone see's ?
 
May be, because the knockout is removed it would be a violation. Perhaps a chase nipple would make it compliant. Did you get called on it?
