Hello everyone,

I have a question with regards using NEMA 1 enclosure panelboards in tropical environment (in Hawaii). The project is for a hangar facility, the panelboards are located in the mechanical/electrical rooms which is unconditioned space and use outside air for supply air. Is there any corrosive issues with using NEMA 1 enclosure for this type of application or it has to be NEMA 4X? if corrision is an issue, how long will take to see sign of corrosion?

Thanks

Nema 1 indoors in any non corrosive environment will last decades without rusting in the state of Hawaii. As long as it is not subjected to direct moisture being located in front of a window that is left open all the time. Store some swimming pool Chlorine in that same room and the opposite action occurs.

4X is the only listed enclosure for protection from corrosion.

In this case, moisture is necessary for corrosion; therefore reduce moisture, you will eliminate corrosion. If you are truly concerned then add a dehumidifier to the room to keep humidity below 60%.

If your panel is large enough, you could also consider an electric space heater.
