I am implementing an Energized work permit. My concern is energize work permit will make it difficult to troubleshoot PLC controlled machines. Is their any provision that applies only to PLC when it comes to energize work permit.

Note: the hard part is getting authorization from managers that might not be at the facility when troubleshooting is required.

Thank you

Energized is energized. Does not matter if it is PLC or 15KV switchgear. The same rules apply.

Why would you want to create such a system in the first place? Train and supervise the guys doing the work so they know what they can and cannot do, and how they can do it safely. Make it an SOP.

Then, you only need special permission for things outside the norm.

Energize work permit is a requirement by NFPA 70E Article 130 (A)(1)

"Energize electrical work shall be performed by written permit only"

Of course you can troubleshoot, just use appropriate PPE and train the troubleshooter on the hazards.

Look at exceptions under 130 A (3).
