A longtime carpenter friend of mine is thinking about finishing his basement and asked me about this. We live in Minnesota and this is posted on his city's website for electrical installation information....

"Repair, remodeling and additions to homes built prior to April 15, 2000
require sealing of all electrical penetrations except electrical boxes and
fan housings.

Repair, remodeling and additions to homes built AFTER April 15, 2000 ARE
governed by the new Energy Code (MR 7672), which requires that ALL
penetrations in the building envelope be sealed."

What are they trying to tell me??!! I've done residential, but it was before 2000 and don't know what they mean by "all penetrations in the building envelope must be sealed".

I'm not exactly sure what they want there, but here where you go from conditioned space to non-conditioned space you have to seal all of the penetrations with expandable foam so that there is no air leakage.

I have seen in the east where the outlet covers to have gaskets.

But then, here, we use our AC 9 months out of the year.

I think what they want is fire/draft caulking to seal all penetrations in the wood you drill after you install the wire. Why dont you call and ask them I dont think they bite unless you dont caulc properly??
