I am an electrical contractor and currently one of my customers has received a proposal to upgrade their lighting in the facility. Their proposal includeds energy, maintenance and air conditioning savings. I can calculate the energy savings but maintenance and air conditioning I am a little lost on. I understand there is a ballast and lamp savings when going from MH to fluorescent and a btu reduction also. But how to get an accurate number I am a little troubled with. Is there a software program that can help me out here.

Energy saving calculators

There are several calculators available for Lighting at OEM websites, (ie) Sylvania, GE, etc., but as the NEMA guide below describes an SES contract shifts the burden of modeling-efficiency claims, with a calculator or spreadsheet, to the OEM vendor or ESCO.

Lighting control is the cost savings. Timing, dimming & daylight harvesting is a large energy savings between dim-able fluorescent & HID (rarely dim-able).

NEMA's Guide to Lighting Controls http://www.nema.org/stds/lighting-controls.cfm describe several other control systems, integration with HVAC / networked-energy management, and industry standard, economic-evaluation methods.

Vari-Ballast Control (VBC) www.iecp.cc may be an exception for HID dimming. This EC&M Magazine 2007 product of the year, http://ecmweb.com/product_depot/2007/ claims to better T5 & T8 efficiencies with add on modules for controlling HID ballasts.

Check the availability of a Shared Energy Savings Contract (SES) with an Energy Service Company (ESCO) as described in the NEMA document above. With new equipment investments, this litmus test fails if no one will share the risk / reward of claimed-energy savings.
